With this post, I want to give you an overview of the 7 key virtues of Bushido. Life is often times like a war or battle — conflicts will appear, you’ll have to choose a side, you need a strategic plan and you have to be ready for unexpected attacks.
The samurai — one of the best and most iconic warrior cultures — lived their lives by a strict philosophy known as “Bushido.”
So, chances are, that you can benefit from this philosophy for your own everyday life.
Righteousness (義 gi)
A samurai only fights when necessary and only if it’s the right thing. He always keeps up his moral integrity. He upholds justice and fairness no matter the personal cost.
Justice is also one of the four cardinal virtues. Doing the right thing even if you get no benefit from it — or even if it harms you — is the most important step towards inner peace.
Be fair. Do the right thing.
Loyalty (忠義 chūgi)
A samurai values loyalty and commitment. He is expected to be dependable and trustworthy, prioritizing their obligations for their lord, family and community over personal desires.
Although loyalty is very important, it’s very rare in our modern society. Everybody is opportunistic and selfish. Loyalty is rare and therefore valuable. And it’s part of reaching inner peace.
Stay loyal.
Honor (名誉 meiyo)
A samurai must uphold their honor through their actions, living in a way that reflects their principles. It reflects their character and reputation. Dishonor is considered worse than death and can only be restored by the act of seppuku (suicide).
Sure, you don’t have to commit suicide if you fall short of your values, but it shows how much the samurai valued their principles. Keep this in mind. Make a list of the times you fell short of your principles for one day.
Would you have to commit seppuku if we’re a samurai?
Respect (礼 rei)
A samurai treats even his worst enemy with respect — before, during and after the fight. It’s an act of kindness, self discipline and humility.
It’s similar to the golden rule — treat others as you would like others to treat you. If you give respect, it’s likely that you will also receive respect.
Respect others.
Honesty ( 誠 sei)
A samurai never lies. He’s honest all the time and if he promises something — consider it done.
It’s simple. Honesty and integrity are considered as the best character traits one can have and they are achieved easily.
Never lie. Keep up your promises.
Courage (勇 yū)
A samurai never fears anything if he fights for something he believes him — not even death. If he has a purpose, he’s always ready to sacrifice himself for it. He chooses death over dishonor.
Real courage — also part of the four cardinal virtues — is like loyalty very rarely seen nowadays. But you need it to stay true to your principles. And even if you don’t have to sacrifice yourself physically — standing up for your beliefs takes courage.
Stand up for what you believe in.
Consistency (誠 makoto )
A samurai never changes a chosen path. He commits to the chosen task, even if he’s about to fail. He stays loyal to his lord, even if he’s outnumbered and surrounded by enemies.
Loyalty, honesty, honor — in this virtue everything comes together. You have to be loyal to your community. You have to keep up your promise. You have to commit to your principles. Retreat is not an option.
Stay consistent.
