An Ordinary Employee
Just a short story I wrote. It’s my first. I just wrote what I thought of.
It had been a month since the ordinary employee had decided to quit his job. He had no plan—no guidance. He just knew that something had to change. But so far, his life had only gotten worse. He dreamed of wealth and freedom and a villa in the Maldives. But he was an unemployed loser. There had to be another way than working himself to death day after day. But what should he do? “Should I just give up, find a new job, and return to the boring but secure life I actually wanted to leave behind?”
As he wrote this in his diary on his favorite park bench, a voice came out of nowhere from the side: “Are you serious?! Do you really want to go back to a life you so obviously hate?” A man in a suit was suddenly sitting next to the loser.
“What am I supposed to do? I’m just a loser!”
“You’re not a loser!” replied the man in the suit. “You’re a human being! And do you want to know what human beings have already achieved? They walked on the moon. They built empires, world wonders and cities that lasted for ages. They conquered themselves and became soldiers and athletes. They fought for their dreams and then lived them. And if they managed to do all this, you can too! But you have to go out and do something important, something valuable, something risky. You can achieve your dream life, but remember: while we wait for life, life passes.”
The loser closed his eyes and repeated the sentence again. “I have to say, that’s brilliant! Where did you...?” The human being stopped. The man in the suit had disappeared.
